The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the continent concluded negotiations of the Lima Commitment “Democratic Governance against Corruption”, thus making the document ready for adoption by the Heads of State and Government of the hemisphere in the plenary session of the VIII Summit of the Americas, to be held on April 14.
The meeting of Foreign Ministers was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Ambassador Néstor Popolizio, who expressed his satisfaction for this achievement thanks to the effort and good will of the delegations during 7 months of intense negotiation. The representatives of the countries of the region considered that this result revitalizes the Summits process, because after 13 years this mechanism manages to reach consensus on an action oriented document.
The text includes specific actions for the fight against corruption in the region on issues such as transparency and access to information, participation of civil society in monitoring government management, protection of informants and freedom of expression, education in democratic values, role of the private sector in the fight against corruption, financing of political parties, transparency in public works and government procurement, exchange of information and legal evidence among prosecutors, cooperation between the banking and judicial sectors, furthering asset recovery initiatives, measures against bribery and international bribery, among others.
